NBC’s Olympic Coverage biggest ever

When the Beijing Olympics goes to air on the 8th of August, NBC will begin swamping the airwaves with more than 3,600 hours of coverage during the 16 day event. The majority of the content will be streaming video available from NBCOlympics.com while 1,400 hours will air on NBC and sister stations USA Network, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC and Spanish broadcasts on Telemundo. There will also be High-Definition coverage on USA HD and Universal cable channels.

There will be more hours of coverage in Beijing than the combined total of every previous Summer Olympics that has been televised in the USA. Covering the 28 sports and 203 events will be virtually 24/7 and offer viewers a “home for everything” without enough hours in a day to be able to take in all that NBC will be offering.

The first week of broadcasts on NBC will focus heavily on the swimming events and Michael Phelps quest for eight gold medals to add to the six he won at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Right.

But that streaming video cannot be seen from many nations, including mine. Canada.

Also, there are hassles trying to view it on Mac. IF you download something called Silverlight from Microsoft and IF you use Firefox, it might work. … but not for me in Canada.

Does the NBC video play for you there in China?

Hi Rick,

I know what you mean about the player. The DRM is a real pain for anyone wanting to view the content outside of Window Media Player. Sucks if you’re on a mac too.

The NBC broadcasts will only be available to residents in the United States - like most other international rights holders (like the BBC or CBC).

It’s kinda of a shame that Olympic broadcasts aren’t available via one site for all nations as there are certainly some going to greater lengths than others to ensure the widest availability of content as possible.

Why does NBC not get it? The 2008 Opening Ceremonies, a spectacular event, could have been better presented by a news network! I first noticed this when the NBC voice, Bob Costas, mentioned that all of the children in the center stage, surrounded by hundreds of Tai Chi masters, were speaking about global warming. It was in Chinese, but it was beautiful, at least I think. NBC couldn’t be bothered to provide an on-screen translation. In fact, much of the best of the entire ceremony was in the Chinese language, but all we heard of what was going on was Costas occasionally filling us in on the overall idea, when he wasn’t talking about something else. Is this the best NBC can do? Is it too much to ask, to know what’s being said, and sang? Is this not the 21st century, where technology supposedly rules? The Opening Ceremony is a big deal, but NBC totaly bombed. I could have muted it all and just watched the pretty video and come away with the same experience! A big DUH to NBC and their current Olympic monopoly, may it not last…

Who is the NBC woman commentator for the womens syncronized diving?

bill - August 18, 2008 @ 9:49 am

whats next? 5 man synchronized diving, what a waste of viewing time, in fact any diving event should be covered by msnbc at 3 o’clock in the morning, i can’t believe it merits prime time coverage, nobody cares except greg louganis. this will be the last olympics that that i will subject myself to, i love real athletic events that you can witness a clear winner, but anything that has to be decided by a judge needs to be banned from the olympics, like gymnastics. diving, boxing, ice skating, please nbc ,concentrate on real athleti events.
