The road races were in the Olympics from the beginning, but women’s events were only added in 1984.
Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland wins men’s time trial
Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland has won the men’s time trial at the Beijing Olympics. Gustav Larsson from Sweden won the silver medal and Levi Leipheimer from the United States won the bronze.
Australia’s medal hopeful Cadel Evans finished fifth.
Kristin Armstrong of the United States claimed gold in the Women’s Individual Time Trial with a time of 34:51.72 on the 23.8km course.
Emma Pooley of Great Britain won silver with a time of 35:16.01 and the bronze went to Karin Thurig of Switzerland in 35:50.99.
In very difficult conditions Nicole Cooke from Great Britain has won the women’s road race in 3.32.24. What started out as hot and humid weather, a storm hit Beijing bringing down heavy rain.
Emma Johansson from Sweden came second and Tatiana Guderzo from Italy came third in a photo finish.
Samuel Sanchez wins men’s road race
Samuel Sanchez from Spain won the 245.4 km road race just now - the longest course in Olympic history.
He completed the race in 6:23.49. Davide Rebellin from Italy finished second to take the silver and Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland came third.

Cadel Evans withdraws from time-trial
Runner-up in the Tour de France, Cadel Evans from Australia, has had to withdraw from the time-trial at the Beijing Olympics after slipping on a wet floor and injuring his knee.
He is still however, hoping to compete in the road race at the Olympics.
