Tibet open again to travelers

China has opened Tibet up again for travel following the riots there three months ago. Two Swedish tourist are among the first travelers to visit Tibet.

“The tourists experienced by themselves the stable situation, harmonious society and beautiful environment in Tibet,” Tanor deputy director of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Bureau of Tourism said.

“The success of the Olympic torch relay held three days ago in Lhasa demonstrated that the foundation for the social stability has been further consolidated.”

There were rumors that China would not open Tibet again until after the Olympics. This is good news for travelers looking to combine a trip to Tibet and the Olympics, although it won’t be clear for a while as to how difficult it will be to get a permit to travel to the region.
