Another report on the hotel over supply at the Beijing Olympics
Yet another report on the unexpected high vacancy rates of hotels with just three and half weeks to go before the Olympics.
Xiong Yuemi, deputy director of the Beijing Tourism Bureau, said Tuesday that 45.5 percent of hotel rooms were now booked for the Olympics.
Always keeping a positive outlook on what might appear to be bad news, “This is within our expectations,” Xiong said.
The figure of 500,000 foreign tourists has long been given as to the expected number coming to China for the Olympics, but no one seems to have revised this figure since reports of fewer foreigners will come to Beijing started appearing.
It really something I wasn’t expecting and it seems like China is much more interested in protecting the Olympics from any trouble than using them for profit. One thing is for sure, even if there are only a handful of foreigners in the audience, you will see their faces at least half of the time the camera turns to the spectators.
