American pastor stages a bizarre protest
I have been trying to avoid writing about the different protests going on in Beijing. There haven’t been a lot as security is so tight, but the ones did take place got headlines from media around the world. This one however, is slightly more bizarre.
An American pastor checked into the Novotel Peace Hotel and painted the walls with “Beijing 2008 Our world Our nightmare” and a quote from the bible. He trashed the room and left without paying he repeat the exercise at another hotel, recorded it and uploaded the videos to YouTube.
He called it the “Gadfly Project”. He is still on the run and even managing to maintain his blog.
… How very weird.
Anyway, thanks for such detailed information! This blog really provides a lot of stuff that we like to know. Keep up the good work! Am really looking forward for the opening ceremony! ^^
I just wanted to clarify about the statement posted by mike, the american pastor did not “trash” the room, he simply was trying to be a voice for the voiceless in a non-violent way. He was not trashing a hotel room he was making a statement, and I think its too bad not very many people care to speak for the ones being persecuted in China. Its been a hush hush thing but thanks to that pastor whos heart is definitely in the right place, their voices hopefully will be heard.
Lisa, I think everyone has a right to protest, but you must admit the way this was done was a bit unusual. Did he just paint the walls? Did he destroy any other items in the room? If you can provide any more details as to what happened that would help.
So what if it was unusual or bizarre? The man’s point is to get attention for a worthy cause. Most of the world merely talks about the Chinese government stamping out people’s rights and crushing the expression of those who oppose them. This pastor has found a way to be heard. Hurrah for unusual and bizarre methods, which shake up the status quo!
Honestly, it’s too annoying how people protest against other countries. No country is angelic and if there were truly one out there, it would be beneath them to wag their fingers, shake their heads sadly and make derogatory comments about other countries. Rather than protest, organize and HELP. That’s what charities are for. Instead, when it comes to China and some other countries that are the West’s favourites at being verbally and politically beaten up and picked on, they just like to state how “bad” they all are. How they’re never going to be good enough. Well, how could they if you constantly think that way and all you do is bash and complain? Every country is like a person and politics oftentimes equates to a chaotic kindergarten room full of children that can’t understand how to work together. Kids are naturally cruel to one another and certain groups band together to bully others. If we’re so much more civilized, why are we like the bullies?
Mike, The pastor did not destroy anything else in the room, he just painted on the walls the names of 5 people who are in chinese prisons because of their faith, and also there was a scripture painted on the wall. This was his way of speaking for the ones who cannot speak for themselves, and yes it might of been a bit unusual but you have to admit he did get his point across without harming anyone. He also plans on paying for all the damage that was caused to the rooms and also plans on turning himself in at the end of the olympics. And Linh, there was more to this than just a protest, there are people being tortured and killed in China because of their faith, this was not at all done to just pick on China. This is more than just a charity case. Hes a very caring pastor trying to be a voice for the voiceless. So you may think that this is annoying but maybe you ought to find out whats really going on in China so you can see the whole picture and understand why this was done. This pastor is very caring, and loving. I wish there were more people out there who cared enough to do something about the persecution of our brothers and sisters in China.
yet another example of religion being used as a weapon to disagree with another’s point of view.
If you ban religion, you get peace
simple really.
Nothing profound to say at the moment. Nevertheless, I support this project. I have friends of different religions from China that have been directly affected by the unjust dominating hand of the authorities in the PRC. They all appreciate this message that is taking the internet by storm. I wish there were more religious groups that were for the freedom of others and not just theirs. Go, Gadfly!
