Protest pens at the Beijing Olympics
China has said today that they would allow protests during the games in certain designated areas. They are planning to set up three “protest pens” in different parks around Beijing.
“We have dedicated places for demonstrations at several parks,” Liu Shaowu, director of the security department at Beijing’s Olympics organizing committee, told a news conference.
“Chinese law protects the legal right of people to hold lawful demonstrations and marches.”
Groups who would like to organize would still need to seek approval for their protest. It is unclear however as to what kinds demonstrations or protests would get approval.
