Xian is safe for tourists says mayor
The mayor of Xian Chen Baogen said they continue to ensure tourists’ safety after the hijacking incident this week.
“Ensuring the safety of each tourist is a basic requirement for us,” said the mayor.
Chen said it was an isolated case and reiterated that Xian is safe for travel. The city received 31 million travelers last year with 1 million coming from overseas. The mayor said they are expecting an increase of at least 10 per cent in visitor numbers this year.

I spent 3 months in Xi’an as a volunteer english teacher and - asside from crossing the road - I felt perfectly safe. Watch out for pick pockets or you may go through 3 phones in as many months like one of my students and when you cross the road look left, right, up, down and behind you. Other than that you should be fine.*
