Olympic venues 123 days to go
I cycled to the main Beijing Olympic venues today for the first time this year. There wasn’t a lot of change from when I went last year, especially with the landscaping. The whole area felt pretty dusty. The main stadiums sit alongside the fourth ring road which is about an eight lane highway, which doesn’t help with the pollution.
This month the Birds Nest will be completed and the first official event will be held there on April 18th - the IAAF Race Walking Challenge. I am looking forward to actually being able to go into the stadium to get some pictures. I saw some footage on CCTV recently of an Italian company laying the track in the stadium.
The Olympic village looks almost complete.
I am also looking forward to checking out the swimming center at the synchronized swimming qualifiers starting April 16th.
This set up doesn’t look too safe.
Naturally a lot of people from certain other countries will want to make bad comments about the China Olympics and its buildings. It is especially so if those people come from countries that have had no input to design, engineering, project managment or construction of the buildings…China had chosen the best designs and the best people/companies for construction. Take a good look at any building site even a few days before completion, they are much the smae as these pics.
It could be argued that the twin towers of the world trade centre in New York were pretty unsafe building, it took very little to knock both down…China’s Olympic buildings will last at least as long as the Great Wall.
