Non-official websites allowed to show Olympic clips in Australia

In a ground breaking deal non-official websites in Australia will be allowed to show short video clips of Olympic events for the first time.

The Seven Network holds the rights to the Olympic Games in Australia and the deal is believed to be the first of its kind in the world. Under the deal non-official sites will be allowed to show 3-minute clips of events a day, but sites will have to ensure they will only be allowed to be seen in Australia.

“It is a fairly significant development,” Mr Gosper said. “The IOC has, for a long time, been at the forefront of supporting both the rights of the official rights holders and fair access to news about the Olympics for media around the world.”

The 2008 Beijing Olympics is the first Olympics to take place where social networking and video sites like YouTube are widely used throughout the world. Chinese Olympic broadcaster CCTV will even be using YouTube to upload short videos.

That’s fantastic news…

This can only benefit consumers like us. The way I see it, the IOC would have been signing exclusive deals to its detriment. There has been a huge push toward online video and not allowing smaller players to publish clips of the event would only decrease the exposure of the event.
