EV71 virus outbreak in China

China has had an outbreak of Enterovirus 71 virus in Anhui; 22 people have now died from the lethal virus.

The Enterovirus 71 virus or EV71 can cause hand, foot and mouth disease.

“Authorities in Anhui … are doing the utmost to treat the children and strengthen disease control,” Anhui province official, Wang Yan, said.

With the Beijing Olympics looming, any negative press about China is going to be a concern for Olympic organizers.

“Chinese health authorities have put in place targeted prevention and control measures in Fuyang city and Anhui province, including enhanced surveillance, training of health care workers at all levels in treatment, prevention and control, strengthening of environmental health management and the supervision and monitoring of drinking water quality,” a World Health Organization statement said.

“A public awareness campaign is ongoing, stressing the need for good personal hygiene, mostly by hand washing.”
