The Olympic village had a “soft” opening yesterday.

“The advance men from 12 national Olympic committees are scheduled to check in at the village today,” Yin Lei, an organizing committee staff at the village’s arrival and departure center, told Xinhua.

“We call it a soft opening,” he said.

The village will host around 16,000 athletes and officials and include various amenities such as a hospital, shops, churches, restaurants and a gymnasium. The Olympic village will be used as private apartments once the Paralympics are completed.
