Medal Prospects: Michael Phelps has a chance to win 8 gold medals, Katie Hoff, men’s and women’s basketball, beach volleyball, softball, Jeremy Wariner in men’s 400 meters, Bernard Lagat, Donny Robinson in BMX, Tyson Gay in 100 meter sprint, Serena Williams and Venus Williams in the tennis.

Athens Medals: 102 medals, 36 gold, 39 silver and 27 bronze.

The United States will be sending 596 athletes to Beijing for the Olympics. The team comrprises 310 men and 286 women. Some of the star male athletes include swimmer Michael Phelps, gymnast Paul Hamm, sprinter Tyson Gay. The female stars include swimmer Dara Torres, gymnasts Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin and sprinter Allyson Felix.

The U.S. will compete in all 28 sports except for the handball. For three athletes it will be their fifth trip. They include Dara Torres, archer Butch Johnson and cyclist George Hincapie.

The oldest athlete on the U.S. team is 58 year old John Dane III competing in the sailing. The youngest is diver 15-year-old Mary Beth Dunnichay who will compete in the 10 meter synchronized diving. Her partner Haly Ishimatsu is also 15 years old.

At the 2004 Athen’s Olympics the United States won a total of 102 medals, 36 gold, 39 silver and 27 bronze.

United States defeat Spain to win gold in men’s basketball

The United States ‘redeem team’ have certainly redeemed themselves at the Beijing Olympics, not losing a single game and defeating Spain 118-107 in the final to win the gold medal.
The bronze medal was won by Argentina, who defeated Lithuania 87-75.
