Sheila Taormina’s Olympic dreams

Sheila Taormina is going to miss this week’s world championship in Budapest, Hungary, but her coach believes she has done enough to earn a spot on the Olympic team. She is hoping to earn a spot in the modern pentathlon.

It is her third Olympic sport. She won a gold in swimming in 1996 and competed in the triathlon in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.

“No one has ever gotten to the top of the world in three different sports,” her coach Lew Kidder said. “No one’s really even tried to do it.”

There are 36 spots available in the modern pentathlon for women. Each country can send up to two athletes. American Mickey Kelly will be in the first group of qualifiers from her performance at the Pan American Games.
