I am a fan of of triathlon, a sport that I have competed as an amateur and enjoyed for many years. In triathlon, there are three disciplines, swimming, cycling and running in that order. The distances for Olympic competition is 1.5K swim, then 40K bicycle and followed by 10K run. The strategy is quite complex as there are so many talented individuals that have a talent and strength in one of the disciplines.
Strategies are played out on the course and mostly on the bicycle as there are opportunities for competitors to “Draft,” from another competitor and with this strategy allow strong runners to keep their strength and energy for the run and finish.
My favorite competitor is Julie Ertel, a current silver medalist in women’s water polo from Sydney 2000. She has now qualified for US Olympic team to compete in Beijing. It is quite unusual for an athlete to compete in two different sports and two different Olympic games, so I am excited to see her compete.
Julie is one of those who has a strong swim, and strategizes on the bike to bring her recent strength, running to a quick finish. I am hoping that Julie will have a good race in Beijing and enjoy the wonderful culture, people and history of China and oh, by the way, don’t forget to eat really good Chinese food after the race.
Thank you for your time spent reading my comments.
