What does Beijing mean?

Beijing, the capital city of China is written as: Âåó‰?¨ in Chinese. “Bei” means north and “jing” means capital.
Beijing is also referred to as “Peking” and is pronounced as such in other languages like French and German. Beijing has also been known as Zhongdu, Dadu, Shuntian and Peiping.
It was renamed Beijing when the communists took over in 1949 and established the capital in Beijing. Yanjing is anonther informal name for Beijing and is also a popular name for a local beer.
The emblem for the Beijing Olympics looks like the Chinese character “jing” (‰?¨) and is the second character in “Beijing”.
