London rap group to handover Olympics at closing ceremony

Preparations have been made for the handover to London at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. The handover ceremony will feature ZooNation a hip-hop dance group, former X Factor winner Leona Lewis and David Beckham. Traditional British icons like red double-decker buses won’t be featured.

A spokeswoman for London’s Olympic organising committee said the ceremony would reflect “the best of British, with a range of talent showcasing London’s creativity, diversity and youth”.

Not everyone agrees that the choice was the right one. Branding expert Peter York said the choice of a hip hop dance troupe was a mistake. “The visual language belongs to America and it is something Britain has no particular purchase on.”

The 16 minute performance including the one for the closing ceremony is expected to cost 2 million pounds.
