China steps up security further for the Olympics

Security is going to beefed up even further for the Olympics to unprecedented levels. AFP reports that two terrorists have been executed in north-west China.

“As far as China is concerned, the international situation and the political environment is becoming increasingly complicated by the day, and the dark clouds of terrorism on our borders are a fact that cannot be ignored,” an editorial in the China Daily said.

“Up until the present, we know there will be 80 heads of state attending the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony — as the host nation, we are faced with unprecedented pressure and a huge responsibility.”

Security checks are in place at subway stations and any packages sent in the mail are heavily scrutinized. Checkpoints on roads leading into Beijing will monitor everyone entering the capital.

Surface to air missiles
have been set up near the Olympic stadiums for further protection.
