Badminton venue hailed as being perfect

The venue for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics has been described as the best ever by the Punch Gunalan, vice-president of Badminton World Federation (BWF). The venue is located in the Beijing University of Technology in southeast Beijing.

The 2007 International Badminton Invitational Tournament is currently being played at the stadium.

“It’s nearly perfect and the best venue I have ever seen. All the venues for the previous Olympics were temporarily modified and had problems more or less, but this venue was specially designed according to the characteristics of badminton,” Gunalan said.

“I inspected the venue three weeks before the opening of the competition at the Athens Olympics, but it was not fully ready. However, this venue in Beijing has been put to use within one year away from the opening of the Olympics. It is really the first time in Olympic history.”

Trash will be collected from 122 hotels and the 31 Olympic sporting facilities.

“Before the Olympics opens in 2008, a larger number of these restaurants and canteens will have their trash collected together and treated,” said Guo Weidong, a publicity official with Beijing utility administration commission.

Shanghai special Olympics ends with a bang

The closing ceremony of the 2007 Special Olympics completed last night in Shanghai.

The Special Olympics is for disabled athletes to experience participating in an international sporting event. There is no focus on competition. The slogan for the games was “I can do it”.

Organizers and participants are calling the games a huge success. It is not on the scale of next year’s 2008 Beijing Olympics, but the event went very smoothly.

“Shanghai residents have become more concerned with the intellectual disabled people because of the Special Olympics, and the city has become more warm-hearted,” taxi driver Zhang Weiyu said.

Overseas artists, José Carreras and Kenny G appeared in the closing ceremony.

Top 5 Most expensive Beijing Olympic merchandise

In a country where a factory worker may only make around $200 a month, only a few people will be able to afford to buy any of these items. While the Chinese design might appeal to a few foreigners interested in Chinese culture, the products are clearly aimed at the Chinese market. With the hive in economic activity leading up to the Olympic Games, I am sure there is a market for the products.

No fat bums at the Beijing Olympics 1 reply

fat bum Olympics

Beijing Olympic organizers are currently taking applications for hostesses at the games next year. They have specified some criteria: “no tattoos, no big bottoms, and cut down on the earrings.”

I have been in China for the past couple of weeks, and the only fat people I have seen are either foreigners and a few Chinese business people. They are looking for 208 hostesses for 23 test events.

“We don’t want anyone who looks in any way sleazy because that could really put athletes off,” Li Ning, principal of Beijing Institute of Protocol, who is heading the selection process was quoted as saying.

“Bone structure and height should be uniform,” she said. “For example, we don’t want any wide bottoms.”
