First Asia Boxing Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bangkok Thailand

The First Asia Boxing Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bangkok Thailand was held from January January 25th to February 2nd, 2008.

Uzbekistan had four boxers qualify for the Beijing Olympics. Thailand, Korea and China all had three boxers qualify.

Here is a list of all of the boxers that qualified at the tournament.

Uzbekistan and Algeria lead boxing Olympic qualifiers

Four boxers from Uzbekistan and eight Algerian boxers recently qualified for the Beijing Olympic games.

Other countries include eight boxers from Thailand, six Moroccans and five Tunisians.

“I want to have nine boxers in the Olympics,” said Taweep Jantararoj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand. “I have two boxers to choose from in the light-heavyweight division.”

Boxing will have 286 competitors in the Beijing Olympic games competing for gold.

Thailand hoping for three taekwondo berths at the Beijing Olympics

Thailand is hoping for at least three taekwando berths at the Beijing Olympics. Chonnapas Preamwaew’s bronze in Manchester qualifiers gave Thailand its first taekwondo berth. Their next chance is in Vietnam at the Asian qualifiers.

“In Vietnam, it will also be very tough,” Thai taekwondo offiicial Preecha Tortakul said. “Many countries including Iran and Jordan will be fielding strong competitors so we shall be satisfied if we get two more places.”

Thailand won a bronze medal for taekwondo in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
