Mahe Drysdale wins Olympic Berth Decider
Three time World Champion single sculler Mahe Drysdale has beaten 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist and two time world champion Rob Waddell in the decider of the best of three event on Lake Karapiro in New Zealand today.
The pair have been locked in an intense duel over the last couple of months for the single place in the New Zealand Olympic team heading to Beijing. The pair have met 7 times with Mahe only winning 3 of those races but todays decider was an emphatic victory with Waddell finishing well after Mahe had crossed the line.
Rob Waddell only came back to rowing recently after being a grinder for Emirates Team New Zealand at the America’s Cup.
The New Zealand Rowing organistion must now decide who they will send to the event, despite the win, but surely after Mahe’s performance today you’d expect the berth to go to him.
Rob Waddell would likely earn a spot in a doubles scull.
