British team to offer high-tech anti-pollution masks to athletes

British athletes competing in outdoor endurance events, including athletics, rowing and cycling are testing newly developed anti-pollution masks. Athletes won’t be able to wear them while they are competing, but they could wear them while they are training, moving about the city and warming up for their event.
Mask wearing athletes is probably not the kind of image China will want to be showing to the world.
“Clearly, we would say that there is no offence intended,” said Graham Newsom, the British Olympic Association spokesman.
“It may well be that the work the Chinese have been doing to try to counter some of these conditions has a positive impact and the masks are not required. But if conditions are such that performances could be affected, we want to be ready to do what we can to assist our athletes.”
One of Britain’s Olympic hopefuls marathon runner Paula Radcliffe is an asthmatic and she may have problems competing if Beijing’s air quality doesn’t improve in 7 months time.
