Stockmarket to continue to boom post-Olympics
China’s already over heated stock market is predicted to continue to grow once the Olympics has finished, according to the investment firm UBS.
“If history repeats itself, we would likely continue to see a positive stock market return for China in both 2008 and 2009,” Shan and Huang wrote.

Country: Japan
Ryoko Tani (mainden name Tamura) is a popular Judo champion in Japan who won her first Olympic medal (silver) at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 when she was just 16 years old.
She has won the International Women’s Judo Championships every year since 1990. She won gold medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and the Athens Olympics in 2004. She appears on television in Japan often and in 2003, she married Yoshitomo Tani a professional baseball player.
It is still uncertain if she will compete in the Beijing Olympics, but she will have the whole Japanese population hoping she will.
China’s police get in line for Olympics
Wanting to show a clean view of China to the world, the Chinese government is requesting it’s police force to shape up for the Olympic games. They could land themselves in trouble for spitting, smoking or eating in public.
“We will spare no effort to do a great job for the Games and beyond,” Beijing traffic officer Zeng Qinghui was quoted as saying by the official China Daily newspaper.
The government is also encouraging its citizens to refrain from spitting, littering and driving wrecklessly.

Bush accepts Olympic invitation
United States President, George Bush has accepted Chinese President Hu Jintao’s invitation to attend the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
“He extended an invitation to me and Laura and our family to come to the Olympics and, of course, I was anxious to accept.” George Bush told reporters in a public statement.
Yang Wei power behind China’s team gold medal
Yang Wei helped to power China to a gold medal in the men’s team title at the world gymnastics championships in Stuttgart, Germany. The six man team comprising: Yang, Xiao Qin, Huang Xu, Chen Yibing, Liang Fuliang and Zou Kai beat Olympic champions Japan and hosts Germany, came in third.
“It’s the fifth time I’ve won a team gold medal and this competition has strengthened team spirit,” said Yang after achieving his sixth world gold for China, including individual titles.
The US team came in fourth. “It’s a team effort whether or not there was a mistake, fourth place is a gigantic jump for us. No one is going to count us out now for Beijing.” said Gymnast Guillermo Alvarez.

Wanted: smiling children’s faces
Beijing Olympics organizers are launching a campaign to collect photographs of smiling children’s faces from around the world.
Exactly how the photographs will be used is still confedential.
Requirements:
- picture must be of a smiling child
- must be at least five million pixels, in color
- must never have been used before for commercial purposes
- saved in JPG format with the filename the name of the child
Photos need to be sent to the following address, by express mail service, with the term “SMILING FACE” on the envelope:

600 applications from Taiwan to volunteer for Olympics
China’s Olympic organizing committee received over 600 applications for volunteer positions at the Beijing Olympics.
In total they have received 560,000 applications - a record for any Olympic Games.

Hopes for Christine Ohuruogu to compete
Christine Ohuruogu won the women’s 400 meter in Osaka last week, but she may not be able to compete in the Beijing Olympics.
Christine was banned not for taking drugs but for failing to take three out of competition drugs tests, one in October 2005 and two in June 2006. She received a one year ban for not taking the tests and a lifetime from competing in the Olympics.
The decisioin whether to lift the ban currently sits with the British Olympic Association (BOA).
“I’m number one in the world and it would be a shame if I wasn’t in the Olympics,” she said.
“I’m hoping my appeal to the BOA will swing my way now. There are precedents for it. I’m hoping that’s the case.”

Yao Ming plays in the NBA where he is considered to be one the best centers in the league. He is currently playing for the Houston Rockets in the NBA.
He carried the Chinese flag in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and hopes to carry it again at the Beijing Olympics.
