Torch Design Competition
The Beijing Olympic organizing committee is calling for designs for the Olympic torch. The competition closes February 28, 2006.
Each participant can submit up to three designs. The top three designs will win a cash prize of US$50,000.

$700,000 award for athletes
Athletes from Armenia are being offered $700,000 for every gold medal they bring home at the Beijng games.
The country won their first gold medal in Atlanta and they won a bronze medal in Sydney, but failed to take home a medal in Athens.

Australia prepares to spend $30 million in training for Beijing Olympics
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) will spend over $30 million on its team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as it aims for another top five finish in the medal tally.

US names basketball coaches for Beijing games
The United States named two NBA coaches as assistant coaches of the US men’s basketball team for the 2008 Olympic Games in Colorado Spring on Monday.
The NBA coaches are Mike D’Antoni of Phoenix and Nate McMillan of Portland, Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim was also named an assistant.

Olympic Mascots Revealed 1 reply
Beijing Olympic officials revealed the five mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympic games at the ceremony to mark 1000 days to go.
The mascots are based on the following popular Chinese animals:
- the fish Beibei

- the panda Jingjing

- fire Huanhuan

- the tibetan antelope Yinying

- the swallow Nini

The reading of the first syllable of each of the nicknames translates into English, “Beijing Welcomes You”.

Sohu.com to host Beijing Olympic Site
Internet media company Sohu.com has agreed to provide hosting and web content for the 2008 Beijing Olympic games.
The sponsorship deal should give Sohu a great deal of international attention as they are one of the leading Internet companies currently in China.
