Pollution fears for long distance and endurance events
In a marathon held in Osaka, Japan on Saturday several runners were taken away on stretchers from heat exhaustion. High temperatures, humidity and high levels of pollution in Osaka are conditions that athletes will be facing in Beijing next year. Beijing’s pollution could even be worse than that of Japan.
“For me, it was the hardest race of my life because the condition is no good,” said José Manuel Martínez of Spain, the 10th-place finisher, standing a few feet from where another competitor toppled over without warning. “I hope the Olympics will be better. If Beijing is going to be anything like this, I don’t know what we will do.”

He took part in a tree planting ceremony. Each tree planted bears the name of each participating country. When the team visits Beijing next year they will be able to see a fully grown tree.
“I was very impressed with the progress that they have made in preparation for the hosting of next year’s Olympic games. They are many architectural wonders, some already complete and some currently under construction. All reflect the country’s effectiveness in preparation for this prestigious event.”

Cuban boxer banned for life
Bantamweight champion boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux, has been banned from competing for Cuba and participating in the Beijing Olympics. The boxer was competing at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and was charged with overstaying his visa, although he claims that he had no intention of defecting.
Back now with his family in Cuba, Rigondeaux is still hopeful the ruling will be overturned.
“I’m thinking positive. I’m calmly waiting for the decision of my superiors,” he said. “If they give me the opportunity to box, that’s what I do and I will do it as well as always.”
