UN calls a truce during Olympic Games

The UN has passed a resolution which calls for a truce during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The resolution calls for countries to bring peace to the world through sport.

“With a history of over 1,000 years, the treaty is a peace accord that has been observed for the longest time in history,” said Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Beijing Olympiad, to the assembly.

While the “truce” is commendable, one wonders why we cannot just continue to have peace regardless of whether the Olympics are on or not, and what is going to happen in Iraq?
