One spectators view who went to the Beijing Olympics
One thing I have enjoyed so far running this website, is reading the thousands of comments that have come in. Some positive and some negative. I thought this comment was worthy of repeating here about one person’s experience of attending the Beijing Olympics. From the media reports I have read, it sounds somewhat accurate, particularly the food and atmosphere about the place. I would love to hear more from people who have attended or are attending the games. I am sure most people though are having a good time, and like anything, your enjoyment of something is however you want to make it.
Did any of you attend the Olympics? We were at the pool for the shortened anthem and it was the only glitch so probably an accident but fit with the rest of our experience in the country. We just returned and it was our third (Atlanta and Sydney). This time my husband and I saved a long time to take our three girls and his mother there. It was a HUGE disappointment. China is not what it appears on television. Those that went and everyone that we talked with who attended other games were deeply disappointed and disturbed by what we witnessed. A country trying and people that are nice but a country that is obsessed with looking good but although a socialist capitalism is truly still a communist regime. The entire experience was actually very sad …the events were good, opening ceremonies was entertaining especially for television viewers and the facilities have an amazing outward appearance but there is no spirit of the games..no place to gather and enjoy the country camaraderie. The sponsors like McDonalds truly got ripped off as the venue food was horrendous (and not Asian) and no McDonalds in the venues..food ran out at almost every venue including opening before events began. It was the worst experience I can remember. The lip-syncing little girl in opening tells you most about the Chinese…there is a lot more to the country than what you are seeing on television.
hey if you want to eat junk food like Mcdonald, why don’t stay home.
Not our opinions at all.
McDonalds is right in the middle of the Olympic Green. You need to go past it to get onto the subway. There were 18 lines, 20 or so deep at each, and staff of hundreds to serve as quckly as possible.
The food is not super expensive. They have Asian choices. No hot dogs But asian sausages. Popcorn was from microwave. Chips. Coke in bottle for 5 RMB.
There is a lock-down on letting people get near to the venues without tickets. That’s part of a problem.
