Men’s basketball groups finalized for Beijing Olympics

The men’s basketball groups have now been finalized for the Beijing Olympics. Germany and Greece qualified on Saturday will play in Group B with Angola, China and Spain. Spain are the world champions and Angola have been playing well in the Stankovic Cup currently being played in China.

Croatia joins Argentina, Australia, Iran, Lithuania and European champions Russia.

“I had no preference as to what group we would be drawn in,” Greece coach Panagiotis Giannakis told reporters after the draw in Athens.

“There are seven to eight teams that could all win a medal and we want to play the best and leave our own mark in the Olympic tournament.”

The basketball competition starts on August 10th, two days after the opening ceremony and goes right through to the final day of the Beijing Olympics. The competition will be played at the Wukesong basketball stadium.
