How much money goes to China for every China assembled ipod
A great deal of focus is going to come to China in the coming months with Beijing Olympics approaching on a range of issues, including the powerhouse economy of China and its place in the world. A new series from Ted Koppel will appear on Discovery Channel on July 9th titled, “Koppel on Discovery: The People’s Republic of Capitalism”.
He follows the story of Americans who have lost their jobs factory jobs to China. He traces the cost of the parts of an Apple iPod and finds that China earns just $4 for every $299 iPod assembled in China, with Apple making $80 in profit.
I did a search in Google and found this 2007 article from the New York Times and they came to the same conclusion (or Ted just did his research from the article).
Here is a breakdown of the costs:
Hard drive (Toshiba) $73
Display module $20
Processor $8
Contoller chip $5
Distribution costs $75
China assembly cost $4
Apple’s Profit $80
