Day 3: August 11th 2008
I was watching the judo today and thinking “AT LAST! A small nation has medals!” as the Azeri and Tajik judo players won medals in the Men’s up to 73kg group. But sadly I was to be denied. Azerbaijan has 8 million people and Tajikistan has 7 million people (more than Wales and even allowing for a 10% margin of error could not be counted as small nations), but none the less congratuations to them for earning their nation’s first medals at the 29th Olympiad.
As for those nations that do have a population smaller than Wales, it was a mixed bag. Mullings from the Bahamas was beaten by Calleri of Argentina in the Men’s Singles at the tennis, but Zorigtbaatar from Mongolia qualified for the next round of the Men’s 57kg Group in the boxing.
