Opening ceremony rehearsals to start in August
Rehearsals for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics are set to kick off this August.
“Everything is going on smoothly and we surely will have a wonderful opening ceremony as well as a good closing ceremony,” Jiang Xiaoyu, executive vice president of the Beijing organizing committee, said Tuesday.

Beijing full of confidence at 500 day mark
Beijing is full of confidence at the 500 day mark to the Olympics in making the games successful and profitable.
“We are absolutely confident that the Beijing Olympics will make profits,” said Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee (BOCOG), during an interview with Xinhua on the eve of the 500-day countdown. Source
Some doubts have been expressed however, by foreign media over organizer’s lack of experience and not seeking foreign advisors who have experience staging an event like the Olympics.

Shark fin not on the menu
Exotic menu options might have to be removed, if legislators in Beijing get their way.
“Serving shark fin to foreign guests during the Olympic Games could greatly hurt China’s national image, and officials should start to remove the dish from the dining table right now,” Xu Zhihong, a deputy to the National People’s Congress, told the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Australia starts vaccination program
The Australian Olympic team has started preparations to vaccinate its athletes in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
“This is simply a precautionary measure to ensure the athletes don’t fall ill before or during competition,” AOC president John Coates said in a statement released yesterday.

Cost of Olympics will not exceed Athens
Beijing Olympic organizers have stated that the cost of running the 2008 Beijing Olympics will not exceed that of Athens. Athens spent $12 billion - double than what they originally budgeted for.
“I don’t have an exact number for you, but I can say that our investments in the Olympics Games next year will not exceed the money spent in Athens,” said Yu Xiuqin, the deputy director of the Bureau of Statistics of the Beijing Municipality.

Beijing to have more doping tests
Organizers are planning to conduct 4,500 doping tests during the Olympic Games, 1000 more than the 2004 Athens Games.
“As part of its zero-tolerance approach to fighting doping, the International Olympic Committee has decided to increase the number of tests by a large amount,” organising committee executive vice-president Yang Shu’an was quoted as saying.
