Australian men and women’s hockey teams hoping to qualify
The Australian women’s hockey team, the ‘Hockeyroos’ is hoping to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, by claiming one of the top two spots in the Oceania Cup at Buderim.
“We definitely need to win the tournament. There’s no light hearted approach - it’s all or nothing,” veteran striker Nikki Hudson told AAP.
The defending mens team the ‘Kookaburras’ are also hoping to qualify at Buderim this week.

Australia beats North Korea in soccer
Australia’s under 23 soccer team beat North Korea 1-0 in an Olympic qualifying match.
Australia needs to grab one of three Asian spots to get into the Olympic games.
Australia disappointed with athletic results
Danny Corcoran, chief executive of Athletics Australia, was disappointed with the results of the Australian team at the recent athletics meet in Osaka. Jana Rawlinson in the 400m hurdles and Nathan Deakes in 50km walk both won gold medals, other medal hopes did not fair as well.
Medal hopes included: pole vaulters Steve Hooker, Paul Burgess and Kym Howe, long jumper Bronwyn Thompson, 1500m runner Sarah Jamieson, 400m runner John Steffensen and 5000m runner Craig Mottram all finished out of the medals.
“I think there was an enormous wake-up call for the sport”, said Danny Corcoran.
“We don’t want to have the same feelings walking away (from) the Beijing Olympics.
“Beijing will be the defining moment for a lot of athletes’ careers. We have to be a darn sight wiser there and this time they have to get the preparation right. The underlying sentiment is there won’t be second chances for a lot of them after Beijing.”

Hu in invites Australian opposition leader to Olympics
China’s President Hu Jintao at the recent APEC meeting in Sydney, Australia invited the opposition and leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) Kevin Rudd, to the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Rudd is one of the few Mandarin speakers from a western country in his level of position. Hu and Rudd spoke together for about 30 minutes in Mandarin.

Horse virus in Australia disrupts equestrian qualifiers
The equine influenza crisis in Australia which has seen many horse racing events in Australia cancelled, could now effect Olympic qualifying events.
“We are having talks with the International Equestrian Federation to find an alternative date or, if necessary, totally new arrangements for Olympic dressage team qualification,” EFA chief executive Franz Venhaus said.

Commonwealth triathlon champion Brad Kahlefeldt gets bronze
Commonwealth Game’s gold medallist Brad Kahlefeldt, came home with a bronze in the world triathlon championship in Hamburg, Germany. German, Daniel Unger just beat Spain’s Javier Gomez to win Germany’s first trialthon’s gold medal.
Kahlefeldt is confident that he will be able to do better in the Beijing Olympics as he was able to still come third after being stepped on by a fellow competitor.
“I can’t be disappointed with the bronze. It’s my second world championship medal and I gave it everything I had,” said Kahlefeldt, who finished just 18 seconds behind Unger (1:43.18), while suffering leg cramps.

Aussie women struggle in gymnastics
Australia has never done to well in the gymnastics and they are currently struggling in the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
“I’m not making excuses. It’s a young team. They did the preparation, but they succumbed to nerves. That’s something that you can’t simulate,” said shocked coach Peggy Liddick.
“If I had the answers then it wouldn’t have happened. I need to go back to the drawing board.
“They didn’t do a bad job on the floor. I just hope it’s enough to go to Beijing. There’s nothing more to do than wait it out.”

Jana Rawlinson on target for gold in Beijing
Jana Rawlinson won gold in Osaka at the World Athletics championships in the 400 meter hurdles. It was her second gold medal at the championships. She gave birth to a son just 8 months ago.
“We’ve had such an up and down year - and to come home with this …” she said. “I know my little son is not quite old enough to understand but I’m sure he’s cheering me on back home.”

Australia starts vaccination program
The Australian Olympic team has started preparations to vaccinate its athletes in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
“This is simply a precautionary measure to ensure the athletes don’t fall ill before or during competition,” AOC president John Coates said in a statement released yesterday.
