Beijing receives large private donation 1 reply
Asia’s richest man, Li Ka-Shing has donated US$12.8 to the Olympic Games.
“What we received is not just money but more importantly the patriotism of Mr. Li and his support for the Olympics,'’ the South China Morning Post quoted Liu Qi, Beijing’s top Communist Party official, as saying.

Two years to go until the Olympics
It has gone on now to the two year mark until the Beijing Olympic Games. There are still many problems including the environment and traffic issues to be resolved.
“The problems that exist in Beijing, such as traffic jams and environmental pollution, are things we have to solve, whether we are hosting the Olympics or not,” said Liu, who is also secretary of the Party’s Beijing municipal committee.
“Preparing for the Games should allow us to bring solutions to these problems ahead of schedule.”

Beijing to be a morning Olympics
To satify American audiences many Olympic events are set to be held in the morning (Beijing time).
“This is so unfair on Chinese fans and athletes and is simply satisfying American television audiences,” a source said.

Organizers show off stadiums
Chinese Olympic organizers where showing off their progress in the construction of the Olympic stadiums to foreign reporters.
Some 2000 laborers are working around the clock to get the main stadium complete by the end of next year.

Zhang to show a different side to Chinese culture
Chinese director of the opening ceremony Zhang Yimou, plans on showing a different side to Chinese culture, than what is usually presented.
Zhang says the ceremonies will show international solidarity as well as Chinese characteristics, and that Hollywood director Steven Spielberg _ one of a team of international consultants _ wants to be more than just an adviser.

Plans to hold swimming finals in morning
US television network NBC, is pressuring the IOC to hold the swimming finals in the morning, so they can be shown live on US prime time TV.
Swimming officials in other countries are not happy with the proposal.
“It just doesn’t make any sense and if the finals are held in the morning, it will put us at a huge disadvantage,” Australian swimming coach, Alan Thompson said.

Duke of of Edinburgh calls opening ceremonies a waste of time
The Duke of of Edinburgh has called the opening and closing cermonies of Olympic Games “bloody nuisances”.
I doubt that few people in China will be listening to him. China will be using the ceremonies to show the world how much the country has developed.

Today marks the 800 day to go mark until the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The number 8 in Chinese culture is considered to be very lucky. The Olympic Games will actually start on the 8th of August at 8 pm.

China to ban smoking for Olympics
China is preparing to ban smoking at the Beijing Olympics. In a country where smoking is prolific this is no easy task.
“Considering the country`s smoking population of 350 million, Zhang warned that China faces many obstacles in meeting its goal.”
