Canadian transexual’s Olympic bid

Kristen Worly, who used to be known as Chris Worley was hoping to compete in the cycling at the Beijing Olympics.

The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) said that Worley hasn’t competed in any Olympic qualifying events with times suitable for selection.

“It’s just not possible,” said Lorraine LaFrenière, CEO of the CCA, who says Worley didn’t compete in any of the Olympic qualifying events that could send her to the Games.

“It’s about performance, and she just doesn’t have it. She hasn’t done any of the required events,” she said. “I mean, you can train in your backyard and get results, but unless anybody sees it, unless it’s at an official event, it’s not going to happen.”

Worley underwent sex reassignment therapy, several years ago and takes estrogen to look and sound more female.

She is hoping to become the first transgender athlete at the Olympics, although Worley prefers to use the term “transitioned” instead of “transgendered.”

The IOC in 2004 put rules in place that allow “transitioned” athletes to compete, although no-one has yet taken part.
