Beijing attempts huge dust cleanup

Aside from Beijing’s pollution, one problem that the Olympics and Beijing’s massive overhaul has brought about is the dust created from the construction of new sporting venues, offices, apartments and highways.

Olympic organizers have said they will suspend construction on days where there is bad weather and heavy wind. All construction will be banned from July 21 to September 20.

“Particles and dust at construction sites, which cover about 100 million square meters in Beijing, are a major source of pollution,” said Du Shaozhong, the Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau deputy head.

When I was in Beijing last year I was surprised at just how much construction was going on, that wasn’t related to the Olympics. I would have thought it would have made sense to slow down this construction leading up to the Olympics, but with Beijing’s economy and population growing faster than ever, I suppose this is easier said than done.

I took this picture last year near the main stadium. I think Beijing Olympic organizers will need more than this straw broom to clean up the dust.
