A Hong Kong based company is set to supply 440,000 LEDs to light the Beijing National Swimming Center. The stadium has been dubbed the “Water Cube” for its rectanglar shape and bubble like surface. The LEDs will create an amazing glow effect at night and will be sure to make a lasting impression with the millions of viewers during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“The Water Cube is designed to provide spectacular lighting effects to be seen by millions of people around the world during the Olympics and for years to come,” said Dr. XiGuang Fu, chief engineer for Grandar Landscape Lighting and Technology Group, the primary contractor for the lighting project. “We chose Cree XLamp LEDs because they provide industry-leading performance, and they provide the reliability and design flexibility needed for this highly visible project. Cree also provided technical support that will help make the Water Cube a remarkable, world-renowned lighting installation.”

UN Report: Greening of Olympics impressive

A UN report just released has found that Olympic organizers have made great strides in making the games eco-friendly.

Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director, said: “The initial score card on the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics 2008 is positive in terms of the greening of the Games.”

“The more than $12 billion spent by the Municipal Government and Government of China appears to have been well spent and will be even more well spent if the lessons learnt and measures adopted are picked up by municipalities across the country so as to leave a real and lasting nationwide legacy”, he added.

Some of the initiatives that have been undertaken at Olympic venues include, using solar power, recycling rainwater and using geothermal and heat pump technology for heating and cooling the stadiums.

The hope for the environment is that the Olympics can provide a catalyst for the Chinese government and local municipalities to include similar initiatives when creating new developments in China.
