Philippine boxer Joan Tipon hoping to make it to Beijing

Philippine boxer Joan Tipon recently lost to Orlando Tacuyan, also from the Philippines at the 2007 Smart National Open.

“I had trouble trying to get into my ideal weight as a bantam after my arrival from the Ostrova Grand Prix tournament in the Czech Republic and I was prevailed upon to fight in the featherweight class,” Tipon said.

He is now focusing his efforts on the Boxing World Championships being held later this month in Chicago.

“I feel bad that I let my fellow Negrenses down with this loss but I’m glad that there are people like you who still have faith in me. I really hope to make up for these two losses by winning my future important bouts”.

Chinese hot pot - huo guo

Chinese hot pot or huo guo is one of the delights of eating out in China. Typically the soup is brought to the table and kept heated by a gas ring. The soup is usually divided between spicy and non-spicy. Various vegetables, tofu, noodles and meats are cooked briefly in the soup. It is similar in style to Japanese dish shabu-shabu only more spicy.

A sesame sauce is often used for dipping the meat or vegetables.

Factory 798

Factory 798 was a factory area which has been turned into a sprawling collection of art galleries, coffee shops and work spaces, for Chinese and foreign artists.

It is on the corner of Jiuzianqiao Lu and Jiuxianqiao Beilu. There aren’t any subway stations close by, so it is probably better to take a taxi. Admission is free.

Cycling in Beijing

While it might seem like a nightmare trying to cycle around Beijing, if you take care, especially at intersections it can be a pleasant way to get around the city.

Beijing has bicycle lanes reserved for cyclists (most of the time) along most of the main roads. Don’t ride too fast and be careful when crossing intersections, even when going through green lights. Make sure you lock your bike when you leave it on the street.

Beijing Yong Feng Jie Mei Bike Shop

Blue skies in Beijing

Yesterday was a beautiful autumn day in Beijing. I you read any western newspapers they invariably write about how bad the pollution is in Beijing In a recent video I took of Beijing Stadium, the sky was incredibly hazy. This could be due all of the construction work going on in the area.

Beijing does have a problem with pollution, but it is not necessarily as bad as what some journalists make out. The Xinhua news agency reported that Beijing had up until the end of September, 186 registered “blue sky” days this year - one day more than the same period last year.

China burns coal for much of its electricity production and the government reported that it will be closing down 1000 coal mines before the start of the Beijing Olympics. A new subway line, line 10 is also due to open next week which should help reduce congestion on the streets.

Volunteers get practice for Beijing Olympics

Volunteers had a chance for practice by providing road guidance and emergency assistance during China’s National Holiday in Beijing.

More than 100,000 volunteers provided assistance during the celebrations.

See here for more details on becoming a volunteer at the Beijing Olympic Games.

“I planned to visit temple fair with my family, but then there is this volunteer program. I think I have to take part,” said Wang Jingrui, a 58-year-old volunteer.

There was a bit of rain in the morning, which wouldn’t have made their job any easier.
