Aya Medany and Edvinas Krungolcas win pentathlon events

Aya Medany from Egypt and Edvinas Krungolcas from Lithuania won the women’s and men’s world titles at the 2007 Modern Pentathlon final in Beijng. Medany was the first female to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Elen Rublevska from Latvia and Sara Bertoli from Italy came in second and third places.

“I just recovered from a leg injury,” Medany said.

“I think today’s competition is a warm-up for the Olympic Games next year.

“I will be 19 years old next year. It is an uncertain dream for any pentathlete to get a medal at the Olympic Games.”

“Khryapa was the secret of our success. Thank you first of all to my two great stars - Kirilenko and Khryapa. Both of them they are wonderful people as well as they are great players. We wanted to stay in the game the whole time. In the scouting we spoke about that first - stay close and make them feel the pressure. They felt the heat and we took advantage of it,” said Russian coach David Blatt.

Lithuania defeated Greece 78 to 69 to claim the bronze medal.
