Beijing hotel prices rise 8 per cent

Hotels in Beijing raised their prices an average 8 per cent over the past year.

According to Jones Lang LaSalle, the increase of inbound tourists is the biggest factor behind the hike. Over three million overseas tourists visited Beijing from January to November, 7,000 more than that of all of 2005

China eases restrictions on Taiwan reporters

The Chinese government has eased restrictions on Taiwan reporters. Reporters will be allowed to have multiple entry visas and can hire local Chinese to assist them with their reporting.

Olympic city chief sacked

The Communist party chief of the Olympic city Qingdao was sacked recently.

“The Communist Party of China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection is investigating Du’s case,” the official Xinhua news agency said in a terse report.

“The commission found clues of Du’s malpractice after receiving reports from the public during an official routine inspection,” Xinhua added, without elaborating.

Corruption has continued to plague Olympic preparations, but at least the organizers are coming down hard on offending officials.

Terrorism drills held in China

Counter terrorism drills were held in Qingdao, China in preparation for the Communist Party Congress as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“The country must be ready for terrorist threats and prevent major terrorist crimes from occurring in China, to ensure the successful holding of the 17th national congress of the Communist Party of China next year and the 2008 Olympics,” Zhou said.

Two Koreas closer to preparing joint Olympic team

North and South Korea are working together to field a joint team for the 2008 Beijing Games.

The IOC said a meeting between representatives of the two countries earlier this month in Doha, Qatar, produced “productive discussions,” but the qualification process for athletes remain an unsolved issue.
