From Beijing to Turin
As the 2006 winter games has drawn to a close, excite is starting to build for the next summer Olympics in Beijing 2008.
The Chicago Sports has an interesting description of the upcoming event:
“After the less than thrilling winter Olympics staged in a country familiar to millions of Americans, the Beijing games promise all the elements of an international thriller: mystery, money, controversy and pageantry. It will offer to the West a glimpse, through press and television, into a little-known country whose old civilization is colored by two very different philosophers, Confucius and Karl Marx. ”

China to challenge US in Beijing
China is putting all of its efforts into both organizing the best Olympic games and assembling the best team.
It’s successes in Turino are showing that the country is developing strongly in International meets.
China is directing seemingly limitless resources to organizing the best Games ever and to fielding the best Summer Olympics team ever. The country’s potential was seen in the 2004 Summer Games, where it won 31 gold medals (second only to the USA’s 35) and 62 overall, and again in Torino.

Crackdown for US team
US Olympic sport’s organizers are planning on enforcing athletes to behave better, after a couple of incidents in Turin have reflected bad on the team.
“This team has a taken a hit in terms of its comportment here in Italy because of a couple of incidents involving some high-profile athletes,” Jim Scherr, chief executive officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), said.

Coach confident for Liu Xiang
Chinese coach Sun Haiping, is confident that Liu Xian can break the world record for the men’s 100 meter hurdles.
Liu scored a gold medal at the Athens Games in 2004.
“We have achieved our scheduled objectives in the winter training and Liu has laid a solid foundation for a more difficult 2007.
“We will intensify the strength training in the new season. If Liu can complete these tasks, his body quality and strength will be greatly improved.”

Beijing embraces high tech security
Beijing Olympic organizers are planning to install a high-tech facial recognition system at several venues.
The system would have the potential to detect known hooligans, terrorists and other criminal elements.

Star NBA player wanted for Olympics 1 reply
Chinese officials are hoping Wang Zhizhi, who is currently playing for Miami Heat will play for the Chinese team. In the past, the Chinese Basketball asssociation has had trouble encouraging him to play for the Chinese national team.
Wang needs to “take practical action to change his mistakes and make a contribution to the 2008 Beijing Olympics,” it quoted Li as saying, without giving any details. “We hope he can gather up his determination, take action, and come on home at an early date,” Li said.

Sponsorships coming together
The International Olympic Committee has collected more than $800 million from its 11 corporate partners, and total sponsorship dollars by the time the Beijing Olympics begin are expected to be in the billions.

Big Expectations for Chinese Divers
China grabbed a total of seven gold medals at the recent FINA Southern Cross Grand Prix, held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
Australia’s head diving coach Hui Tong rated the performances comparable to an Olympic final as China’s divers again proved they will the ones to beat at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Beijing Games to boost gold price in China
FT is reporting today that the Olympics in China may help boost the gold price.
At just under $2,000 (�1,700, �1,150) for a nugget the size of a cigarette lighter, there are plenty of cheaper 2008 Olympics memorabilia on Shanghai’s main shopping street, but that has not held back demand. “There will be a new bar every year until 2008 and many people want the complete set,” says a salesman.
