Argentina and US secure spots in Olympics

Argentina beat Brazil 91-80 in the FIBA Americas Championship and became the first team in the competition to secure a spot in the Beijing Olympics 2008. They beat Brazil despite missing several of their top NBA players.

“Six months ago when players started saying they were not going to play many people in Argentina were upset,” Hernandez said. “They didn’t believe this team could qualify for the Olympics. But we believed we could do it.”

The United States thrashed Puerto Rico 135-91 to secure their spot in the Olympics. The US team is favorite to win gold, but they haven’t performed well recently in international competitions.

Liu Xiang won China’s first gold medal in world athletics beating America’s Terrence Trammell in the 11th IAAF World Athletics Championships, in Osaka. Trammell’s teammate, David Payne finished third.

“I feel really good right now. During the race I made some mistakes and hit some hurdles, so I didn’t really run that well,” he said.

“I could have run better, but I ran well enough. Winning the championship is what matters the most. I wanted to let people know the speed that Asia has.”
