Seven Russians suspended for doping

Seven Russian middle distance runners, including five athletes who had qualified for the Olympics, have been suspended by the IAAF with just one week to go before the start of the Beijing Olympics. The athletes have been accused of submitting somebody else’s urine.

The athletes include Yelena Soboleva who is they year’s top runner in the 800 and 1,500 meters and Tatyana Tomashova a silver medalist in the 2004 Athens games.

Other athletes to be suspended include: Gulfiya Khanafeyeva (hammer throw); Darya Pishchalnikova (discus); and Yulia Fomenko (1,500 meters).

There is not enough time now to make substitutions. Russia’s medal tally is sure to be affected by the doping cases.
