Nick D’Arcy loses Olympics appeal

Nick D’Arcy has lost his appeal against his removal from the Australian team for the Beijing Olympics after a bar fight with a fellow-swimmer earlier this year.

20 year old D’Arcy won the final of the men’s 200m butterfly at the Australian championships in March 25 but was dropped from the squad by Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates on April 18 for bringing the sport, and the team, into disrepute for the brawl with Commonwealth Games gold medalist Simon Cowley.

Cowley sustained a broken jaw, broken nose, fractured eye socket, crushed cheekbone and fractured palate from the fight.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport panel found that D’Arcy had not observed “the provisions of the AOC ethical behavior bylaw”.

The CAS has referred the matter back to the Australian Olympic Committee board which is expected to uphold the decision by Coates which will see D’Arcy excluded from the Australian Olympic Team.
