Michael Phelps advances to final in 200 meter individual medley

There were no finals for Michael Phelps today in the swimming but he did win his heat in the 200 meter individual medley, setting himself up for his sixth gold medal of the Olympic games tomorrow.

His team mate Ryan Lochte is his main rival in tomorrow’s race.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be an Olympian,” Phelps said. “I just kept thinking, ‘Wow, greatest Olympian of all time.’ It’s a pretty cool title.”

Michael Phelps’ schedule for the rest of the Olympics includes:

- Friday, 200 meter individual medley

- Saturday 100 meter butterfly

- Sunday, 4×100m medley relay

Unless a major upset occurs, Phelps shouldn’t have too much of a problem beating Mark Spitz’s record.
