Martin Lel from Kenya wins London Marathon

Martin Lel from Kenya won his third London Marathon in four years. Weather conditions weren’t great and runners faced blustery showers.

“I think what happened today makes me confident of breaking the world record,” said Lel, who also won in 2005 and 2007. “Despite the wind and rain, we ran a fast time.”

Lel is still yet to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. Kenya will decide on its Olympic team after the Boston Marathon.

Irina Mikitenko won the women’s event.

“It was very windy all through the course and sometimes I had to close my eyes and run into the head wind,” Mikitenko said. “It’s only the second marathon I’ve ever run and I am happy to get the win. I would have like to have run faster.”
