Li Na says the home crowd support helped her beat Venus Williams

Li Na said the support of local spectators helped her to beat Wimbledon champion Venus Williams.

“It helped me and pushed me a lot,” Li, the world number 42, told reporters after beating Williams 7-5 7-5 and becoming the first Chinese Olympic singles semi-finalist.

“But I did not hear exactly what they were shouting. I was completely in the excitement of myself,” said Li, at one time the first Chinese player to reach the top 20 in the world rankings.

“It is more exciting to get to the semi-finals of the Olympics. The Olympics is a four years once in a lifetime opportunity, and it’s particularly special to have it in China.

“My family, my husband and my friends were seeing me and backing me. It gave me lots of motivation.”
