Ian Thorpe: Impossible for Michael Phelps to win 8 gold medals

Ian Thorpe who is now in Beijing has said that it will be “impossible” for Michael Phelps to win eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics.

“I have said before that I don’t think he can do the eight, and still believe that,” Thorpe said as he arrived in Beijing. “Mind you, if there is any person on the planet who is capable, it is him. It’s sad, but I just don’t think it will happen.

“But he is going to blow the world away, even if he doesn’t achieve what he sets out to achieve. There are so many good swimmers out there. The standard is incredibly high. You’ve got to look at each of his individual races. He’s up against incredible competition at the moment. Even some of his events that he has always been stronger in, like the 200?metres individual medley – that distance isn’t there any more.

“If he achieves, say, five gold medals, the world should salute that. He is one of the greatest athletes in the world. I just admire his tenacity in everything he does – in the pool, training out of the pool, in everything. He has set his targets and pursues them.”

Michael is a good swimmer and he could get 8 gold medals but it is proberly 50-50 chance. It is possible anyone can do it if they try, and Michael is deffently going to try.

Ian Thorpe is so bitter. Good on Michael Phelps for his amazing, unforgettable achievement. Even better for beating the Aussies in the process. Yay!

History has proven that athletes (not all) who win 5 or more gold medals at one Olympic showing are on some sort of performance enhancement drugs which couldn’t be detected at the particular point in time. I call no names and i am not impressed by his\her achievement. I congratulate all athletes who have medaled and are Drug Free

Michael Phelps is using performance enhancement drugs to booster his performance in the 2008 Olympic Games in China. US needs to test their athletes more remember Marion Jones The so called sprinter champion BIG DRUGGIE, Carl Lewis fans check http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/04/17/1050172709693.html BIG DRUGGIE, Michael Phelps ohh please man this guy won 8 gold medals and no one finds that strange test this guy for crying out loud

All those critics of Ian Thorpe simply just need to SHUT UP!! Michael Phelps would have never achieved all those medals if Ian Thorpe was there at Beijing.
You all better NOT put your heads on a block for Michael Phelps, because look at the outcome of FORMER sprinter Marion Jones!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the American athletes need to be tested more often than the rest of the world…..DAMN IT!!!!!!

Hello sugarsweet”tuffy”

Michael Phelps is not taking performance enhancing drugs… Also, Ian Thorpe is just jealous and he was too scared to compete against Michael Phelps in Beijing. Look at Thorpe now… He is old and has gained quite a bit of weight around the belly… Too bad… Oh yeah, one more thing, Michael Phelps holds that new world record in the 200 M Freestyle.
