Hidilyn Diaz hoping for a medal at the Beijing Olympics

Hidilyn Diaz started training for weightlifting out of necessity in the Philippines. Her poor family had no running water, so she had to carry two five-gallon containers of water everyday for her family to drink and wash.

Diaz is just 17 years old and has been in Beijing since March preparing for the Olympics. The Philippines will pay 339,000 dollars to any athlete who wins a gold medal.

“I will try my best,” Diaz told AFP. “I can’t wear sexy gowns or high heels. I can’t have a boyfriend and I walk like a boy. Sometimes I get jealous as my female friends go to school while I have to lift weights.”

China’s Yue Hongmei is favorite for the 58 kg event.

I am glad to see an article representing the Philippines. There are many Filipinos in America that would like to see there little country represented in the Olympics. We all know there is more talent out there than people think.

I am sure if there was more info on the Philippine athletes, there would be more support for them.
