Hackett disqualified from 10 km swim

The 10 kilometer swim is being run for the first time at the Beijing Olympics. It is an event which Australian swimmer Grant Hackett looked to dominate but he finished a disappointing 15th, but was later disqualified. The top 10 finishers in the race win a spot at the event in the Beijing Olympics.

Russia’s Vladimir Dyatchin won the race with Britain’s David Davies coming in second.

“It certainly surprised me that’s for sure,” Hackett said. “I knew it was going to be a tough race and there were plenty of guys pulling legs, swimming over the top of each other around the turning buoys but I was determined to stay away from all that stuff—that was always my plan.
