Everest torch relay journalists and officials getting ready to quit
A team of journalists from Reuters have travelled to base camp at Mount Everest to cover the Olympic torch relay. On their blog they have captured some great pictures of the mountain. The mountaineering team has been facing bad weather stalling the climb to the top of the world’s highest mountain.
Nick Mulvenney writes from base camp:
Many of the officials who travelled with us from Beijing or joined us at Lhasa airport barely attempt to disguise their low spirits any more. I don’t know whether the cause is the altitude, the cold, the increasingly predictable diet, the lack of showers or just day after day of telling news-hungry journalists that there is no news. One of the senior officials told me again today that he thought we were getting “closer and closer” to “our goal”, while another said he thought our fond farewells would not be not too far away.
Even at base camp for people who are not in top health can have problems with the cold and altitude. I am just glad to be here in Beijing enjoying the warm spring weather.
[…] had the privilege of being the first climber to take the torch to the summit. I am sure now the journalists covering the event will be happy to be able to now head back to town to get a good feed and shower. […]
