Day 7 of the Olympics - athletics gets underaway

I can’t believe how fast the Olympics are going. We are already at day 7 now. Today the athletics gets under away. The track and grass has been brought in and installed after the opening ceremony. The sky is clear after yesterday’s rain and it is not humid (yet) making it a great day for competition.

There will be two finals in the athletics, the men’s shot put at 21:00 and women’s 10,000 meters at the late time of 22:45. The heats start in the men’s 100m sprints, with the final being held tomorrow night.

Favorites for the women’s 10,000m include Ethiopian sisters Ejegayehu and Tirunesh Dibaba.

Michael Phelps will be looking to win another gold in the men’s 200m individual medley. Teammate Ryan Lochte is his rival. I wonder if Lochte would hold back to let Phelps win another medal. The race starts at 10:45AM.

Aaron Peirsol will go into the men’s 200 meter backstroke as favorite.

In the women’s 100m freestyle, Natalie Coughlin of the United States qualified fastest, but Marleen Veldhuis of the Netherlands and China’s Zhu Yingwen also have a chance.

In the Women’s 200m Breaststroke final, world champion and world record holder Leisel Jones of Australia will go for her second Olympic title, after winning the 100m Breaststroke. Rebecca Soni of the United States was the fastest qualifier.

The blind archer Im Dong-hyun, is favorite to win gold in the men’s individual archery event.

Track cycling also starts today at the Laoshan Velodrome. France is favorite to win the men’s team sprint.

The United States will be trying to win gold in the women’s all-round individual competition. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin are favorites for the United States and China has Yang Yilin and Jiang Yuyuan who were part of the team to win the gold medal.
